TLAER Training
(Technical Large Animal Emergency Rescue)
April 7th, 2019
at the Ranch


Chiron Center, Inc. is proud to host a one day condensed awareness Technical Large Animal Emergency Rescue (www.TLAER.org) course for public safety personnel on Sunday, April 7th, 2019 from 0800 - 1700, followed by a family & loved ones BBQ and Ranch Open House from 1700 - 2000.  Personnel interested in attending must be affiliated with a public safety agency and must register to attend the class &/or BBQ.  Suggested donation:  $40 for the class (includes lunch), and an extra $10 per person attending the evening BBQ.

The TLAER training covers the practical considerations, behavioral understanding, specialty equipment, techniques, methodologies, and tactics behind the safe extrication of live large animals from entrapment situations including barn and wildland fires, trailer wrecks, ditches, mud, bog, ice, and confined space situations in local emergency and disaster areas, including the applied principles behind using slings, webbing, and ropes for animal rescue.

nstructors Dr. Rebecca Gimenez, (President www.TLAER.org); and Dr. Julie Bernier, DVM (www.CraterAnimalClinic.com) will include “hands on” practice with live, large animals along with a supplemental PowerPoint presentation and videos.  Lead instructor Dr. Rebecca Gimenez literally wrote the book on technical large animal emergency rescue and will be travelling from Georgia to share her 25+ years of experience from around the world related to large animal rescue.  Dr. Julie Bernier is also a world traveler who currently calls the Rogue Valley her home.  Dr. Julie serves as a veterinarian at the Crater Animal Clinic and her professional interests include equine, wild life, and exotic animals – as well as interfacing with emergency services personnel in animal rescue situations.  

Course topics will include:
  • Awareness level TLAER concepts as well as basic concepts in large animal emergency rescue;
  • Introduction to large animal behavior and senses – normal and under stress;
  • Behavior, approach, basic handling, restraint and leading live animals;
  • IN-DEPTH – Roles of the veterinarian, owner, emergency responders & animal control;
  • Overview of containment and restraint of large animals (physical and chemical);
  • Basic large animal first aid and highlights of critical medical concerns during large animal incidents;
  • Implementing proper emergency field humane euthanasia for large animals;
  • Awareness and practice of the simple manipulation methods (forward assists, backwards drag, Hampshire Slip, cast horse roll, etc.);
  • Introduction to TLAER considerations in water (pools, flat, swiftwater, ice, etc.), unstable ground (mud, bog, slough, wetland, etc.), trench, and confined space rescue situations;
  • Extrication and response considerations including cutting equipment; and
  • IN-DEPTH – What NOT to do in TLAER – a review of live rescues.
 
Public safety personnel and their loved ones are invited to the evening BBQ after class from 1700 – 2000 which will also serve as an open house for our 300-acre ranch complete with information regarding upcoming training, workshop, and program opportunities offered by Chiron. 
 
Class and BBQ space is limited.  Attendance needs to be confirmed via registration so we can plan accordingly – including food considerations for lunch and/or dinner.

Recommended Attire:  Closed toe shoes (preferably boots), a hat, sunglasses, & sunscreen.  Dress in layers to adjust for the weather.  A tactical helmet, leather/safety gloves, eye protection, and animal related PPE are also strongly recommended.
